History

Ballyburke comes from the Irish meaning the mouth of Burke`s   Ford. Obviously several Burke clans lived here.   Today there are none. Its 500 acres were owned by   Lord Sligo of Westport. George Glendinning acted as   his agent.
Balour comes from the Irish meaning new town. The western   80 acres were owned by Viscount Avonmore with Mr O   Malley as his agent and the eastern 145 acres were   owned by George Moore of Moorehall.
Bohaun comes from the Irish Bothan meaning Hut or Cabin.   Obviously it was a village , filled with meagre   houses. Its 1,573 acres were owned by Sir Francis   Lynch Blosse of Balla
Cappaharnaun comes from the Irish Ceapach   a`Charnain, meaning The Tillage Plot of the Heap.   Its 292 acres were owned by Viscount Avonmore and   was let to Edward Gibbons on a lease of three lives.
Croaghrim comes from the Irish Cruach Dhonin, meaning Round   Ridge. Its 1,962 acres were owned by Lynch Blosse of   Balla with Peter Touhy as his agent.
Cullintra comes from the Irish for Holly Land. Its 540 acres   were owned by Lynch Blosse of Balla.
Derrew comes from the Irish meaning, An Oak Wood. Its 336   acres belonged to Lynch Bloss.
Derreenascoobe comes from the Irish, Doirin Na Scuaibe, meaning The   Little Derry or Oak Wood of the Broom. This land of   590 acres was owned by George Moore of Moore Hall   and his Agent was Malachi Touhy.
Derreendafderg comes from the Irish meaning Oak wood of the Red Ox.   This land of 1,366 acres were owned by George Moore   of Moore Hall with Malachi Touhy of Kiltharsechaune   as his agent.
Derrynacanna comes from the Irish, Doire na   Cinnfhinne, meaning, the Oak Wood of the Spotted   Cow. Its 268 acres were owned by Lynch Blosse.
Derryoran comes from the Irish Doire Ui Odhrain, meaning O'   Horan's Oak Wood. Its 330 acres were owned by Lynch   Blosse.
Devlish comes from the Irish for dubh meaning black and lis   meaning fairy fort. Its 193 acres were owned by Lord   Avonmore whose agent was Edward Gibbons.
Drimneen comes from the Irish meaning, Small Ridge. Its   acerage was owned by Viscount Avonmore with Mr. O   Malley as his agent who could let it in leases of   three lives or 31 years.
Gorthbawn comes from the Irish gort   meaning field and bawn meaning white. It translates   to the village of the white field. Its 380 acres   were owned by Lord Sligo of Westport and let to   tenants.
Kiltharsechaune comes from the Irish   thairseach meaning door steps. Prior to the Great   Famine (1845 - 1847) the village was so densely   populated that it was said that the door steps were   almost on top of each other. It consisted of 840   acres and was owned by George Moore of Moorehall.   Michael Touhy acted as his agent.
Killadeer comes from the Irish, meaning, Wood in the Country.   Its 720 acres were owned by Lord Sligo of Westport.
Kinuary comes from the Irish Cinn an Iubhraigh,   meaning Head of the Yew, its 1,035 acres were owned   by George Blake of Bellmont, Co Galway with Patrick   Kinnaun of Kinuary as his agent. He let the land in   small farms of 2.5 acres.
Killawalla, meaning   the way through the wood, It`s also known as   Killavalley. These lands were held by Viscount   Avonmore through an agent, Mr. O`Malley who had a   lease of three lives or 31 years. He paid a yearly   rent of 80 pounds and he sublet the land in four   acre farms.
Killawullaun comes from the Irish Bullaun meaning the village of   the little Young Bull. It was said that a wild bull   roamed the village. The 990 acres of land were owned   by Lynch Blosse.
Tawnynagry comes from the Irish, Tamhnach na   gCroidhe, meaning Field of the Cattle. Its 449 acres   were owned by George Blake of Bellmount, Co Galway   and Peter Touhy of Ballintubber acted as his agent
